Promise

I wonder while I’m wandering,
muse while I’m pondering
about the worth of it all,
about whether or not to answer the call.

For my despair sings a song,
seductively inviting me along
to the promise of a life,
to the promise of a knife.

Sheer stubbornness keeps me standing
before all that whispered demanding,
and the knowledge of what this end
will do to my family and my friends.

But knowing that, my weary grief
remains tempted by a promise of relief.

Midnight oil

The days that drag us down
can be put to right
when friends come ’round,
and linger long into the night.

For there’s salvation
and hearty remedy
in conversation
and comaraderie.

For trouble cannot stay
when our friends are near,
and remains far away
out of fear.

Because terror cannot hope to face
all the kindness in this place.

Hero in waiting

When the storm’s at your door,
when the waters rise,
when you’re face-first on the floor –
you’re stronger than you realize.

Don’t look so surprised,
don’t act so unsure,
as though my words are lies.

I promise there’s more
to you than meets the eye.
I’m absolutely sure
you’re stronger than you realize.

My green-eyed daughter

I never met
my green-eyed daughter,
and I bet
it would have been an honor.

To be your father,
and raise you with care.
To love your mother,
and always be there.

But you’re just a dream
that never came true,
and the way things seem
I won’t get to meet you.

But each and every night I see
a child who will never be.
