The painted lady

She wore her widow’s weeds,
black as the night she lost him.

She uncovered the deeds,
green as his face when she caught him.

She remembered the rage,
red as the knife that stopped him.

She turned the page,
blanc as the new life before her.

Hagrid the horrible, II

When you’re not lying there like a wet black noodle,
you’re bouncing about like pink French poodle
or you’re staring up with those big, sad eyes…
How long will it take until you realize
that we weren’t put here just for you –
we have other people we need to pay attention to!

Transit

The pitter, patter of their feet
pounding daily on the street
and the weight of all the soles
stumbling through their grim patrols
cut a pattern of deep scars
which still bled, even in their cars.

Vampire

“Drink and eat,” the stranger said
as he offered wine and bread.
“Now please rest your weary eyes,”
and I responded, hypnotized.
Then he whispered, “Sum quod eris,”
before giving me a sanguine kiss.

Pilgrim

Long into the twisted wood,
past the oak and branch and briar;
deep into the gath’ring dark,
past the circle of your fire.

Further than the distant stars,
twinkling beyond the sky;
deep into your very heart
where you hide behind your lies.

Past the heavens and the earth
and the realms of men and God;
you, who seek out happiness,
onward, onward must you trod.

Threadbare

Little glass doll, little glass doll,
why do you cry?
How did the ocean inside you
light a fire ‘round each eye?

Little glass doll, little glass doll,
why do you break?
Why is it that you fall apart
when we’re fighting for your heart?

Little glass doll, little glass doll,
why do you bleed?
Please get up and follow our lead –
we’ll teach you how to get what you need.

Little glass doll, little glass doll,
why did you fall?
We tried and tried and gave it our all –
why couldn’t you let down your wall?

Contained

When I was a child I had a chest
and thought that chest the very best.

And in that very best of chests I hid my treasures
and sorted those treasures according to their measures.

And in that best of chests of measured treasures there was a key:
a key that was the most important thing to me.

For the key that was, to me, a highly measured treasure resting in my best of chests was for the king of all locks,
a lock that went with a most magnificent box.

So I hid, with cleverness and pride,
the measured treasured key that was important to me that went with the box bound by the king of all locks in my very best of chests
so NO ONE else could get inside.

Over the balcony

Call to me,
oh lover, lover –
call to me again.

I’ll love you even past sundown;
I’ll shout my love throughout the town.

I’ll love you ’til the stars fall down
and then, with them, I’ll craft your crown.

I’ll love as I’m sinking down
when on your love it is I drown.

Call to me,
oh lover, lover –
call to me again.

I’ll lovingly walk at your side
and hang upon your arm with pride.
I’ll love you by the riverside
when laughingly we’ll run and hide.
I’ll love you still ‘long the roadside
while we take the long miles all in stride.

Call to me,
oh lover, lover –
call to me again.

I’ll love you each and every night
and through each and every fight.
I’ll be your master, king, and knight
and serve my mistress to her delight.
I want to take you home tonight
is there any chance, my dear, we might…?

Listen now,
oh lover, lover:
of course my answer’s yes.

To all you recent graduates

My advice to you is this:
do not let the world steamroll you
and treat you like you don’t matter
because you do.

But do not become so cutthroat
that when you wake up at 40
you hate the person looking back at you,
if you wake up at all.

The trick is finding the balance
between your needs and others’
so that you can live well
and with yourself.
