L’esprit d’escalier (the spirit of the staircase)

The bitter words and screams and shouts
as they laid their grievances out
echoed off the very walls,
echoed down the empty halls.

Their clamor shook the wooden beams,
tempers whistling through the seams.
Their words and tempers were so crass,
they nearly cracked the windows’ glass.

They left no hurtful words unsaid
favoring their pride instead
as they tried to save face,
as they tried to leave that place.

Now the house stands, cold and bleak,
quiet but for every creak
of one who walks with teary eyes
for kindnesses unrealized.

The Prelude

Enthralled by your sensual charms,
I pull you tight into my arms
and I can taste within your kiss
what is, at once, both hell and bliss.

And I can see the look in your eyes
of your nightly hunger on the rise
and see your face grow faintly red
as you slowly move toward the bed…

Honest Hearts and Tinmen

Judgement is best left to gods
for people, in their passions,
lack the sense for sensibility
and the judgement to judge.

Only those who are detached
should determine destinies –
though they are those
we should fear most of all.

For who is more dangerous:
one who is driven by desires
or the one who will never
have a heart to hold them back?

Triple H

The rippling and fetid air
clings to me like a lead shroud
whose burning aura so impairs
it would do a horseman proud.

Tempestuous

The dark clouds of the morning
break for a sunny afternoon
that hides behind the raindrops
which herald the evening gloom.

There’s a fickle fancy
that’s blowing on the breeze
who warms our tired, weary bones
only to let them freeze.

Personal prison

There’s a wolf behind my eyes
who I keep chained up with rules and lies.
He’s not the fear that I’ll sin again,
he’s the fear of who I might have been.

Caged

I look into your eyes
and all that I can see
are all the pretty lies
that keep you bound to me.

I’ll not render you the prize
of the tender side of me
for swallowing the lies
offered up by me.

When will you realize
that your impropriety
is the result of the lies
that chained you to me.

Do you look up to the sky
while longing to be free
from all the bitter lies
that keep you trapped with me?

White

The tall shimmering castle
of alabaster stone:
is it filled with peace
or just silence alone?
While I enjoy the vision
of the untouched stone,
I often wonder what’s the point
when there’s just an empty throne.

Blue

There’s the steady weight of sorrow
for those you left behind
as you journey towards tomorrow
through the never-ending sky.
