Dawn chorus
Every spring
the songbirds sing
to the rebirth
of the Earth
and the bounty She brings.

He dressed to the nines,
tried to pretend he was fine,
and bet on his pride
that he was able to hide
pain behind polish and shine.

Man unknown,
anonymous,
stares into the night,
questioning.
Useless.
Eternity
rarely responds,
and when it does
don’t expect
easy answers.

There are things I don’t want you to know,
things I’m too scared to show,
because I’m afraid when I’m done
you’ll turn tail and run
as far as you can go.

A fragment of a fallen star –
ages old, yet without scars.
She shines like a diamond in the night,
piercing the dark with a silver light.
Now the sterling celestial seed
blooms like a flower amid the reeds
to bring such beauty and such grace
to an ancient deserted place.

‘ere I stand,
and ‘ere I’ll stay
with sword in hand
to hold the night at bay.
I shall not stray,
no matter the demands
that come my way.
For this our land
that I guard today,
I’ll shine like a brand
to hold the night at bay.

Little Morty, all in bed.
Little Morty – yes, he’s dead,
but Little Morty isn’t sad.
In fact – Little Morty’s glad!
You can see it in his grin,
how it’s painted on his chin,
and how it never leaves his face,
and how his dead eyes stare off into space.

A few kind words
work better than swords
in the arduous fight
to drive back the night
and all Hell’s hordes.

Growing pains
shatter chains
until all that remains
is sweet rebirth.
Memories
of tragedies
leave us ill at ease,
so let them go.
Hope dances
at second chances,
and gives us glances
at better days to come.
Strength sought,
sorrows fought,
and a future bought
with precious currency.
Free at last,
heartache’s passed.
A happiness cast
with our own two hands.
